AT&T warns potential Verizon iPhone users they face 'life in the slow lane'

The announcement hasn't even been made yet, but AT&T is wasting no time criticizing the Verizon iPhone. AT&T has responded to reports that Tuesday's Verizon Wireless event will announce the Verizon version by noting that AT&T's HSPA+ technology is faster than CDMA.

The statement given to BI by AT&T PR chief Larry Solomon was:
"The iPhone is built for speed, but that's not what you get with a CDMA phone. I'm not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane."
In fact, he's right. Independent tests have shown that AT&T's data network is faster than Verizon's. On the other hand, speed doesn't matter much if the network is overloaded, as users in New York City and San Francisco can attest to.

On the third hand, AT&T should have reminded folks that Verizon's CDMA network does not support simultaneous voice and data calling. That means that you won't be on a call with a friend and be able to buy tickets on Fandango at the same time.

Indeed, a CDMA spec change makes that simultaneous voice and data possible, but no carrier has adopted it, yet. Additionally, LTE would make that possible too, but it's strongly believed the Verizon iPhone will not support LTE, at least in its initial release.
