Verizon iPhones to get unlimited data, unlike AT&T iPhones

Right around the time the iPhone 4 was released, AT&T instituted data tiers, doing away with unlimited data plans. When it announces the Verizon iPhone on Tuesday, Verizon wireless will be offering consumers more than just a network that many --- consumers, anyway --- believe is more reliable: the company will offer an unlimited data plan.

AT&T's two tiers are $15 for 200MB, and $25 for 2GB. While most don't approach anywhere near the 2GB level, according to a survey last year by analysts at Sanford Bernstein, many subscribers dislike the idea of data caps. Those who already owned iPhones were allowed to keep their unlimited data plans if they upgraded last year.

Verizon's unlimited data plan runs $30. Many have expected Verizon to follow AT&T and offer data tiers; if they continue unlimited service for iPhone users, this means they will most likely continue unlimited data service for other smartphones, such as Android.

However, it's not clear how long Verizon will continue to offer unlimited data plans. It has repeatedly made statements indicating that the wireless industry must move to some form of tiered pricing as data use climbs. In fact, its Verizon iPad, which is really a wi-fi only iPad with a MiFi wireless router, does not offer an unlimited data option.
